Gas Station to Flower ShopIn August 2003 our lease was expiring at our Meeting Street location. We had an option on the lease and liked the location, but started looking for a downtown location to purchase. We found this abandoned, contaminated circa 1920 gas station on Spring Street. It was a treasure architectually, but was a big question mark as a business location. We did the due diligence, and discovered that it was sound physically and enviromentally. We took the chance and it turned out to be one of our best decisions. From Mayor Riley to this article by Robert Behre in the Post & Courier, we have had fantastic response. In just five months from our intial walk-through, we had renovated it and moved in.
We feel fortunate to part of such a strong neighborhood. It's an honor to be part of the neighborhood's comeback and the building's history. A former service station in the golden age of the automobile, the building also was a hat shop, bootlegger's location, car dealership, and midnght craps casino. Many thanks to the locals who have stopped in and shared their stories of 131 Spring St. It's great to part of urban in-fill rather than suburban mall sprawl. |
